karen elaine spencer, in her ephemeral interventions, her paintings, drawings, prints and texts as well as spoken word works, explores the power relationships that pervade people’s daily lives, particularly those who are marginalized through their social condition. Spencer’s interest in text and spoken word stems from her concern for intelligibility, for translating one reality into another and for the complexity inherent in all forms of representation. With this perspective, she imagines and creates links between artistic mediums and various means of communication. Her work is in numerous public and private collections, such as the Richmond Art Gallery, the Bibliothèque Nationale du Québec, the Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul, Mount Saint Vincent University Art Gallery, Air Canada and the Canada Council Art Bank.
